Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been talking about DC’s Black Adam comics for a long time. But, it’s finally ready to hit theaters. With Dwayne Johnson’s involvement, Black Adam’s prominence in the DCEU has been heightened among moviegoers. DC is famous for giving villains the cinematic limelight, as evidenced by Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. But the Black Adam is on another level.

A small teaser has already been released on the DC official Youtube channel. But a full trailer has yet to be released. Here in Film Culture, we’re going to discuss everything related to the Black Adam movie in the DC Extended Universe.

When is DCEU’s Black Adam coming to theaters?

The Rock was bound to a black adam film with his production company Seven Bucks and producer Hiram Garcia for years. He first spoke about his excitement to play his favorite comic book character in 2014. Previously, the movie was supposed to hit theaters on December 22, 2021. However, that date was canceled due to COVID-19 lockdowns. Filming officially wrapped in July 2021. With the official DC movie announcement, Black Adam is set to hit theaters July 29, 2022.

Origin of Black Adam in DC Comics

In the comics, Black Adam was a slave in Kahndaq who lived 5,000 years ago. His original name was Teth-Adam. He was granted the powers of Gods like Shazam and was originally called Mighty Adam. He then set out to free his people and rule Kahndaq by delivering his own justice. In the end, he was imprisoned by the gods who granted them to him for abusing his powers.

Dwayne Johnson also gave us some details about his portrayal of Black Adam during WB’s virtual DC FanDome event last summer. He explains Black Adam’s origin saying “He felt the burdens and pressures of a greater entity holding him down until he couldn’t take it anymore”. “He’s a ruthless guardian of justice,” Johnson also added. He also talked about his character’s cruelty in nature. Black Adam has always been considered an anti-hero by comic book readers and this film will attempt to portray the character in the same way.

Cast of Black Adam and other superhero characters

Black Adam will introduce us to The Justice Society of America (JSA) which is a superhero team from DC. This team with members like Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher, actually predates the Justice League. Johnson described the Justice Society of America as a group that believes in fighting for truth and justice.

Dwayne Johnson will play the role of Black Adam who has been imprisoned for 5,000 years. Noah Centineo will play the role of Atom Smasher who is a member of the Justice Society of America. Atom Smasher has the power to control his molecular structure and manipulate his size and strength. Atom Smasher will have a prominent role in the story. Aldis Hodge will play the iconic comic book superhero Hawkman. Sarah Chahi joined the cast as Adrian Tomaz who is a university professor and resistance fighter in Kahndaq. She is also expected to be Black Adam’s love interest in the film, just like in the DC comics. Pierce Brosnan has the role of Kent Nelson who is Doctor Fate in DC Comics. Quintessa Swindell will portray Cyclonemember of the JSA and she can control wind and generate sound.

How does Black Adam fit into the DCEU?

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) released a string of lighter-toned films, and their earnings reflected that they may have found a better track for their films in recent years. Wonder Woman (2017), Aquaman (2018) and Shazam! had earned the sum of $821.8 million, $1.02 billion and $364 million across the globe.

Movies based on morally dark comic book characters have enjoyed success in recent years. The success of movies like Venom, two Suicide Squad movies, two Deadpool movies and Joker, is not a denied fact. The box office success of these antagonist-based films helped bring Black Adam to the public.

So Warner Brothers is one step closer to turning all of their superhero movies into one connected universe, one that will eventually result in another great team. Justice League movie. It will be interesting to see how the tone of black adam is managed by Warner Brothers.

In terms of black adamin the DCEU timeline, it is confirmed that it will take place in the same storyline as Shazam! since it’s already at the end of the Shazam movie. Other than that, many DCEU movies are no longer set in the same world as Marvel. For example, the movie Joker does not take place in the same world as the next Batman movie.

Is Black Adam vs Superman Happening?

The Warner Brothers studio has big plans for the future of black adam but the Box office collection will decide the ultimate fate of Black Adam’s impact inside the DCEU. There is no confirmation of Superman’s cameo in Black Adam, although rumors are circulating about Henry Cavill’s cameo. Superman’s torso made an appearance at the end of “Shazam!”.

Henry Cavill’s cameo as Superman was supposed to appear in this scene, but it didn’t happen. The Rock has long awaited a future battle between Black Adam and Superman. Black Adam and Superman are considered two of the most powerful DC characters in existence.

A battle between Black Adam and Superman has the potential to be one of the most unforgettable on-screen superhero battles of all time. So it’s entirely possible that Black Adam is a threat inside the DCEU and could be a menacing character like Thanos from MCU.
