Vin Diesel to star in Rock ‘Em Sock’ Em Robots movie
Hollywood studio release schedules increasingly look like Toy story; just tons of classic kids toys that come to life, one after another.
Toy company Mattel already has films in development based on brands like Hot Wheels, Barney, Magic 8 Ball, Masters of the Universe, the Uno card game, and even Barbie, which is co-written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. To that to that long list we can now add the 50 year old Rock ‘Em Sock’ Em Robots fighting game which comes from Universal Studios and actor / producer Vin Diesel and his production company. One Race Films.
Before we joke about whether Diesel will play the blue robot or the red robot, we already know that the answer is neither. (By the way, Diesel once played the definitive rock ’em sock’ em robot in The iron giant.According to Mattel’s press release, the film “follows a father and son who form an unlikely bond with an advanced war machine.”
Here is Diesel’s commentary on the news, via this press release:
Taking the classic Rock ‘Em Sock’ Em game, with Mattel as a partner, and aligning it with the type of world-building, the franchise that has made Universal’s success, is really exciting.
By the way, did you know that the robots in the original game had names? They do; it’s the Red Rocker and the Blue Bomber. (The game, which debuted in 1966, is also apparently inspired by an arcade boxing game.) I can’t wait to find out which of these two advanced war machines forms an unlikely bond with Vin Diesel and his son.
