RAY’S PICKS: “I’m Your Man” Explores the Human-Android Relationship | Ray’s choices
Do you like old or quirky movies, but never know when they’re showing? Here are several that I recommend.
“I am your man” (2021): If you could have a perfectly realistic Android lover who is perfectly suited to your needs and wants, would that be a good thing or a bad thing? This is the question posed by this witty and insightful film. Maren Eggert stars as Alma, a research scientist at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, and she’s basically blackmailed into trying out one of those loving robots (she hates the idea, but gets funding for her research. if she accepts the experience). The one designed for her, Tom (the wonderful Dan Stevens from “Downton Abbey”), moves in and is more than willing to romanticize her, but she resists mightily. As you watch the film, see if Alma’s reactions to the situation compare to yours!
Now commendable on Apple TV +, Amazon Video and other platforms.
“It’s such a beautiful day” (2012): It’s the wonderfully bizarre and eerily moving story of Bill host Don Hertzfeldt, a stick figure with real existential problems. In addition to social anxiety and a pretty terrible family history, Bill has memory problems. And hallucination problems. The host chronicles Bill’s sometimes sweet, sometimes heartbreaking journey to oblivion with grim and often hilarious flashbacks to the chaotic lives of his ancestors (who seemed to have a particular problem with trains). It is almost impossible to describe this weird fantasy, but I highly recommend that you give it a try.
